Prof. Blade Tells the Legend of Arbor-Nomics Turf
As a young lad growing up in Youngstown, Ohio, Dick Bare would spend as
much time as he could working at the family's nursery and garden center because
they paid him, and it was much better than doing the chores at home for free.
With nothing but his experience at the nursery and his love of dirt, Dick enrolled
at Ohio State and majored in Horticulture and Arboriculture - and he took a
handful of business courses for good measure.
After graduating, Dick decided to go into business for himself. In just three
years he built a company that was bought by a larger tree service company. And
he stayed with that company until, one day, he received a fateful call from
ChemLawn.
They were starting a horticultural spraying division, which was exactly the
kind of work Dick had wanted to do. So when ChemLawn made him an offer he couldn't
refuse, he moved to Chicago to become one of the first managers of the Tree
& Shrub division.
Then fate took a hand and Dick was transferred to Atlanta, where he fell in
love with the climate, trees, mountains, and the grass. Atlanta was becoming
an international city, a growing metropolis, and like so many others who thought
they were coming for just a few years - Dick decided to stay. He was smitten
with the South.
When ChemLawn offered him a transfer to Pittsburgh, Dick said "no thanks,"
and in 1980 he started Arbor-Nomics Turf. He was on his own again.
As his company started to to grow, Dick sought out other entrepreneurs. In
1985, he helped start the Metro Atlanta Landscape and Turf Association (MALTA),
an organization dedicated to the education of landscape professionals. He was
also President of the Georgia Turfgrass Association.
Dick soon needed help to manage the business. In 1996, Doug Cash joined the
company as vice-president and general manager. Doug spent 20 years in the business,
working his way up from a lawn care technician to become the regional manager
with one of the largest lawn care companies in the country.
Today, Arbor-Nomics Turf serves more than 10,000 customers and millions of
acres in Atlanta, and the company still relies on old-fashioned customer service
to keep its business strong. Every employee's extension is listed on the website
and in the newsletter, "The Buggette," which is given to every customer,
after every treatment. "I encourage people to call Doug or me with any
questions or concerns," says Dick. "We want to be as accessible as
possible to our customers."
