Getting Your Mower Spring Ready

Spring rainstorms can make your dry, lifeless lawn suddenly burst with life. While many homeowners are excited to see the return of their lush, green grass, it also means mowing much more frequently. Arbor-Nomics proudly provides high quality lawn care for property owners in Atlanta, Georgia and surrounding metro area neighborhoods. Our certified lawn care specialists enjoy helping our clients find ways to improve the beauty and health of their grass, and we want to make sure you fall in love with your lawn this season too. Prepare your lawnmower for a busy spring season with these helpful tips.

Change the Oil
The oil in your lawn mower should be changed after 50 hours of use. Therefore, most homeowners should switch out their oil at least one time per year. Since your mower has been sitting idle over the winter, spring is a great time to perform this task. Doing so will give your mower a fresh start and help improve its performance in the coming months.

Replace Spark Plug
The spark plug helps ignite the gas used to run your mower. If the spark plug is run down, then you may have trouble getting it to work well. Ideally, a mower spark plug should be replaced after 100 hours of use, so many homeowners simply add it to their annual maintenance task list.

Clean or Replace the Air Filter
A lawnmower’s air filter can get dirty fast. For this reason, most filters will need to be cleaned or replaced every three months, or before the start of each season. Make sure to check the user manual to find out whether your model uses a reusable foam filter, or a replaceable paper filter. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to avoid mistakes.

Sharpen Your Blade
Mower blades can get worn down quickly, especially in yards with a lot of branches, rocks or other debris. Sharpening the blade once a year can make your lawnmower more efficient at cutting grass. Carefully remove the blade and use the appropriate tools and equipment to sharpen the blade. Take safety precautions to avoid injury. If you notice large nicks or damage, then replace it right away. Using a broken blade is very dangerous.

Clean and Lubricate the Mower

It’s a good idea to clean and lubricate your mower in the winter, before storing it away. However, it can still attract a good amount of dust and debris while sitting in your garage or garden shed. Check to make sure you have removed all leaves, grass clippings or dirt. Clean the mower top to bottom with a clean cloth and warm water. You can also wax the deck to discourage grass from adhering to it. It’s also important to lubricate moving parts with oil. Follow the instructions provided in your manual and clean off any extra oil before using.
