If you are worried about pests in your Atlanta area home, here are some of the most problematic insects and how to identify them.

Whiteflies
Also known as plant dandruff, whiteflies look like very small whisps of white fuzz. Though they may appear delicate, they can cause major damage to plants, since their populations proliferate quickly in warm environments. Their love for sunshine makes the Atlanta area a prime target for these tiny flies. Similar to aphids, they will feed on the fluids inside leaves, eventually depleting the plant of vital nutrients and causing it to die.

Japanese Beetles
Japanese Beetles are one of the most destructive pests in the Atlanta, Georgia area. While many insect species target only a handful of plant varieties, the insatiable Japanese Beetle feeds on more then 300 different species of ornamental trees and shrubs. They can most often be seen in the summertime and are actually quite beautiful. Their metallic, green and copper bodies often shimmer in the sun, making them instantly recognizable.

Aphids
Aphids survive by extracting fluids from the stems and leaves of plants. While this instinct helps their species thrive, it causes major destruction. Not only do they deplete the nutrients of their host, but they can also spread viruses from one location to another. Aphids are oval shaped insects, and very small in size. They also come in a range of colors, most often white, green, black or pink.

Pine Borer Beetles
Pine Bark cause destruction to pine trees by laying eggs on the side of the trunk. Once hatched, their larvae burrows inside the bark, and makes its way to other areas of the tree. Their presence can disturb important functions of the tree, including the flow of sap.

Scale Insects
Scale insects are extremely small and can often appear as if they are simply sticky blemishes on the underside of leaves. They can harm plants because the substance they leave behind while feeding can create the perfect environment for mold growth.
